Futo Tantei[src] (風都探偵, Fūto Tantei), distributed for international markets primarily as Fuuto PI, and alternatively Detektif Futo (lit. Detective Futo) in Indonesia, is a Japanese anime television series adapted from the manga series of the same name, serving as a direct sequel to 2009's Kamen Rider W.

Animated by Studio Kai, a 12-episode season aired from August 1, 2022 to October 17, 2022.

Production[]

Development[]

A trademark for the series was registered on March 4, 2021, around one month before any official announcement was made, and a countdown timer was displayed on the franchise's official website, revealing three unrevealed projects. On April 3, 2021, a press conference was held to reveal these three projects, with the first announced project being an animated adaptation of the manga series Futo Tantei, and the other two projects being Kamen Rider Black Sun and Shin Kamen Rider. It was presented by series producer Hideaki Tsukada, who after giving a brief history on the manga's publication, said the adaptation was being worked on by some of the best animators in Japan and will surely satisfy fans of both the Tokusatsu and anime/manga genres.[1][2][3] During the Q&A session, Tsukada gave an estimated release date of Summer of 2022, while confirming the series' simulcast licensing by Funimation (later Crunchyroll).

The anime was later discussed by Hideaki Tsukada and Riku Sanjo at the 2021 Annecy Film Festival, as well as their motivations behind the manga it is based upon and the TV show it spawned from.[4]

On August 3, 2021, it was revealed through Uchusen Magazine that Studio Kai would be the production studio in charge of the series' animation, with a teaser image released to the public.[5] The issue itself had also included an interview from Seiji Takaiwa, who spoke about his experiences working as a suit actor on W.

Production[]

On September 5, 2021, the show's official Twitter account released two additional stills while announcing some staff members working on the show.[6][7] On October 16, 2021, additional teaser visuals featuring Philip and Shotaro were released on the official Twitter account, which were initially shown at New York Comic-Con.[8][9] On October 18, 2021, Big Comic Spirits released character concept art for both Shotaro and Philip.[10] On November 1, 2021, concept art for Akiko was released.[11] On November 15, 2021, concept art for Ryu was released.[12] On November 29, 2021, concept art for Tokime was released.[13]

On December 16, 2021, Mitsuru Matsuoka announced that he was in the process of recording for a project related to Kamen Rider W.[14]

Post-Production[]

On February 26, 2022, the anime was announced to premiere in August 2022 with several cast members from the KAMEN RIDER: memory of heroez video game, including Yoshimasa Hosoya, Koki Uchiyama, Mikako Komatsu, and Makoto Furukawa reprising their roles, while Akira Sekine and Daisuke Ono joined the cast.[15][16] On May 3, 2022, Matsuoka, along with Koji Kikkawa, Aya Kamiki, and TAKUYA were announced to return as theme song artists from the original series for the anime, while they are joined by franchise newcomer Big Gadgets.

Plot[]

As the wind continues to blow in the city, it brings a little bit of happiness but also great misfortune. This is the Windy City... Futo.

After the fall of Museum-the evil organization responsible for many crimes in Futo, the production and distribution of Gaia Memories was halted. However, Gaia Memories' remnants still remain scattered throughout society and are sold on the black market at high prices. Thus, the two heroes from the Narumi Detective Office are yet to have time to relax. Sightings of Dopants still occur, and the agency receives more clients claiming to experience supernatural phenomena.

Regardless of the arduous task, Kamen Rider Double promises that those who hurt Futo will inevitably count up their sins.

Main article: Fuuto PI Episodes

Similar to Kamen Rider W, each episode is labeled with a letter detailing a plot point of the story and something involving the client of the case or character like the television episodes of the series. Much like Futo Tantei's chapter naming, the letters are lowercased instead of uppercased. Additionally, the episode arcs are split into three instead of two in the main series.

Each episode also has a post-credits chibi short, with some loosely based on something from the original live action show such as Healing Princess or the Delusion Diaries.

Marketing[]

A minute-long teaser trailer was released on February 26, 2022. In commemoration, a special CycloneJoker SH Figuarts was announced to release in August.[17]

On April 4, 2022, it was announced that a special event screening for the first episode would be held on May 3, 2022, with the voice cast in attendance.[18] The event was held at the Grand Prince Hotel, where attendees could view the first episode roughly three months before the series airdate. [19]

On June 7, 2022, it was announced that a screening of the first and second episodes would be held on July 2, 2022, at Anime Expo, with some crew members and representatives from Shout! Factory in attendance.[20][21]

On July 1, 2022, a second teaser trailer was released in Japan.[22]

On October 9, 2022, the final episode was screened at New-York Comic Con one week before the episode had premiered on television.[23]

Release[]

Broadcast[]

  • The series premiered on U-NEXT on August 1, 2022, and begin broadcasting on Tokyo MX on August 8, 2022. In order to prepare new viewers unfamiliar with W’s story, a rerun of the original Kamen Rider W finale arc (Episodes 47 to 49) was broadcasted from July 18 to August 1, 2022 to transition the story before the premiere (if counting the Kamen Rider Accel film in which the story follows after).[24]
  • The series was originally licensed by Funimation and planned to stream there until its parent company Sony had purchased the AT&T-owned service Crunchyroll, later announcing their plans to consolidate all of their future anime content into Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll began a same-day simulcast of the series on July 31, 2022[25][26] in countries where the service is available, such as North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and the Indian subcontinent.[27]
  • The series was licensed in Southeast Asia by Muse Communication and simulcasted on August 1, 2022 on their YouTube channel.[28]

Home Media[]

  • The series was released on DVD/Blu-Ray in two Japanese volumes, each releasing on November 9, 2022 and December 7, 2022. No Region 1 release has been planned at this time.

Notes[]

  • While several animated media has been produced for the Kamen Rider franchise in the past. Fuuto PI is the first to be mainstream and receive the full-length anime treatment while traditionally based on previously existing source material, such as a weekly publicized manga series.
  • Due to the graphic violence of the manga it is based on, the anime aired in Japan in a late-night time slot due to lighter censorship rules during those hours for broadcast TV.
  • Like the live-action television series, the beginning of each episode recaps the previous one using a corkboard with Tachiki's narration.
  • Unusually, in spite of being shown in the opening, Accel Booster is not used, nor even mentioned, in season 1.
