Gaku Sano (佐野 岳, Sano Gaku) is a Japanese actor who portrayed Kouta Kazuraba/Kamen Rider Gaim in Kamen Rider Gaim, with his most recent reprisal of the role in Kamen Rider Zi-O. He also performed his character songs Rise Up Your Flag and Ranbu Escalation.

Biography[]

As a young child, Sano told his parents that he wanted to be an actor. In 2011 while in college, he won the 24th Junon Superboy Contest. He subsequently dropped out of college and debuted as a stage actor, later making various appearances in films and TV dramas.

It wasn't until 2012 until he made his first stage debut in February. In the same year, he landed many various roles in films and TV dramas.

After Kamen Rider Gaim, Sano landed a role in a live-action adaption of the manga series Hell Teacher Nube, with Kaizoku Sentai GokaigerIcon-crosswiki star Kazuki Shimizu and Kamen Rider Fourze star Ryo Yoshizawa.

Post Kamen Rider[]

In 2020, he and Yutaka Kobayashi appeared in a promotional video for the release of the CSM Sengoku Driver.

In 2022, Sano starred in the video game The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story alongside Den-O-star Wakana Matsumoto.

In 2023, Sano attended the third Japan World HeroesIcon-crosswiki convention in Burbank, California.

  • Sano is a fan of Kamen Rider Kuuga and hoped to inspire a new generation of boys with his portrayal of Gaim.[1][2]
  • Sano has a twin brother named Kei Sano (佐野 渓, Sano Kei), who lives in Canada. A family photo of them both resurfaced sometime before the final episode of Gaim had aired, which led to false rumors that Kei was to appear in the show.
  • Sano has performed many of his own stunts in the show, with his physicality and agility being highly praised by Osamu Kaneda, action director Hirofumi IshigakiIcon-crosswiki and suit actor Seiji Takaiwa.[3][4][5]
  • According to Gen Urobuchi, his writing of Kouta was heavily influenced by Sano's cheerful shonen manga protagonist-like personality.[6][7]
  • On May 19, 2023, Sano announced his marriage to actress Keiko Sawaguchi,[8] with the ceremony being held the following December.[9]. Notable attendees included Yutaka Kobayashi, Atsushi Shiramata, Naomi Takebe, and Katsuhiro Suzuki.
