Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight is an American superhero drama television series co-developed by Adness Entertainment and Toei Company, serving as an adaptation of Kamen Rider Ryuki, the twelfth installment of the Kamen Rider Series. The show began airing in the United States on The CW Television Network during its CW4Kids programming block, but was ultimately canceled by the network before the two final episodes aired. The remainder of the series was uploaded to the 4KidsTV website until the site's shutdown.

In 2010, the show won the Daytime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Stunt Coordination", a new category that was introduced to the Daytime Emmys that year.

Production[]

In July 2006, producer Aki Komine received special permission from Toei to develop a pilot for an American adaptation of Kamen Rider. The pilot, which originally starred actor Royce Christyn, was well received by Toei, who then granted Komine the right to adapt one installment from the franchise. Komine brought on long-time Rider fans Steve and Michael Wang to be show-runners, who chose to adapt Ryuki due to the large number of Riders (Ryuki had 13 Riders in total), which included a female Rider. The Wang brothers hired their long-time friend Nathan Long to help them adapt Ryuki in a similar vein as Power RangersIcon-crosswiki, which consisted of splicing together Japanese costumed fight footage along with their own original American footage of suits and actors.

For foreign markets, Toei had originally marketed the series as Masked Rider until the release of Kamen Rider W. Wang had insisted on keeping the Kamen moniker instead, stating "growing up, I never watched ‘Masked Rider’… it was always KAMEN RIDER and seeing it called ‘Masked’ always felt strange. I’m just not a fan of using descriptions to name a character such as ‘Masked’. That’s like calling Darth Vader 'Armored Sith Lord'. It’s silly to me." The decision was also made to distance themselves from Saban's Masked Rider, which was a commercial failure.

In the early licensing information for the series, Adness Entertainment had also intended to produce a film for Dragon Knight. In an interview, Steve Wang stated that a script was written but priority was being diverted into adapting another Kamen Rider instead of continuing with Dragon Knight. Adness went defunct in 2021, indicating they no longer hold adaptation rights.

Story[]

On the other side of the mirror exists the parallel dimension of Ventara, where warriors known as the Kamen Riders fight againist the evil warlord Xaviax with their Advent Decks. In a war that resulted in all the Riders being wiped out, its lone survivor Len follows Xaviax to Earth, where the general tricks ordinary citizens into becoming new Kamen Riders to carry out his evil plans.

While investigating the mysterious disappearance of his missing father, Kit Taylor finds an Adveck Deck and becomes Kamen Rider Dragon Knight, joining forces with Len, Kamen Rider Wing Knight to defeat the ten corrupt yet midguided Riders sent to attack them by Xaviax. They fight not only to save Earth from being destroyed by Xaviax, but also to find Kit's missing father and take back the home they hold dear.

Release[]

Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight had a special premiere on December 13, 2008 on the CW during its CW4Kids programming block in the United States, before it had officially began broadcasting weekly on January 3, 2009. The series was prematurely canceled by the network before the final two episodes had aired, though the full series was uploaded to the 4KidsTV website from December 18, 2009 until its shutdown in 2012.

There are also no current plans for Dragon Knight to have a domestic home media release in the United States itself.

Dragon Knight was also broadcast in Japan on Toei's satellite subscription channel Toei Channel in the fall of 2009 as part of the Heisei Kamen Rider series 10th Anniversary project. A Japanese dub of the series aired on TV Asahi in 2010 with the show's opening and ending songs being replaced by:

Voice actors brought onto the project include:

On July 21, 2010, Toei released the first DVD boxset of Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight containing the first 20 episodes along with a DVD release of the Special Event that took place on January 2010 in Japan. Throughout the summer of that year, Toei released 10 DVD Volumes of all 40 episodes as well as a second boxset with the last 20 episodes.

In Brazil, Dragon Knight was shown on Rede Globo during its TV Globinho programming block, and later Cartoon Network until it returned to TV Globinho. 13 DVD Volumes of all 40 episodes were released by PlayArte Home Video even though their site only lists the first two.

Dragon Knight aired in Mexico on Televisa, and in Venezuela on Venevisión.

Dragon Knight ran in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein on RTL II, but only for 17 episodes due to low ratings. Two volumes of DVDs were released by EuroVideo and m4e (Made For Entertainment) in February 2010, though the show's early cancelation resulted in no releases for further volumes.

An Indonesian-dubbed version of Dragon Knight aired on Indonesia's free-to-air TV channel Indosiar. In most parts of Asia, 10 DVD Volumes and 2 DVD boxsets of all 40 episodes were released by MediaLink.

In Australia, Dragon Knight airs on the free-to-air channel GO!.

There are currently plans to air the series in Colombia on Caracol TV, in Italy on Mediaset, in Latin America on Cartoon Network, and on other Cartoon Network affiliates in Southeast Asia, the Philippines, India, Pakistan.

Notes[]

  • According to co-showrunner Michael Wang, the transformation callout is "Kamen Rider" for the sake of getting the show's name out. This callout is kept in the Japanese dub of the show, though the usage of "Henshin" instead was recommended by Tatsuhisa Suzuki, the Japanese dub voice for Kit Taylor, whose notion was rejected by the producers, who wanted to keep the dialogue faithful.[1]
