"Kamen Riders are this city's symbol of hope!"
―Shotaro rejecting Eternal's claims of being a Kamen Rider[src]

Shotaro Hidari (左 翔太郎, Hidari Shōtarō) is one of the two main protagonists of Kamen Rider W. He is a private investigator of the Narumi Detective Office who transforms into the left-side of Kamen Rider Double (仮面ライダーダブル, Kamen Raidā Daburu) with Philip on the right-side. Alone, he transforms into Kamen Rider Joker (仮面ライダージョーカー, Kamen Raidā Jōkā).

History[]

Background[]

Shotaro Hidari was born to unnamed parents and lost them at a young age, later coming into the care of his aunt in Futo City. In elementary school, Shotaro attended a class field trip at an opera performance by Melissa. On this same day, Melissa was attacked by the Spider Dopant, with Sokichi Narumi rescuing her. Awed by this, Shotaro later visited Sokichi's agency, requesting that he work there. Although his genuine love for Futo was recognized, Sokichi spurned Shotaro away; still grieving over Matsu's death. Soon after, Shotaro was almost killed by the Antlion Dopant, with Sokichi rescuing him as Kamen Rider Skull. Without his knowledge, Shotaro had reawakened Sokichi's spirit as a detective.

Around his high school years, Shotaro grew annoyed at Sokichi's continued refusal to accept him as a protege, becoming a rebellious delinquent. Ignoring his schoolwork, Shotaro fought against any thugs that bullied others, with officer Mikio Jinno regularly pursuing him. One day, Shotaro happened to witness a member of the basketball club being bullied. Learning that the victim was afraid of any scandals that could dent his future career as an athlete, Shotaro did not fight back, instead enduring the thugs' assault. The incident put Shotaro in a hospital where he was visited by Sokichi, the latter acknowledging his honorable actions. To Shotaro's joy, he was offered a job at the Narumi Detective Office after high school, and worked hard academically to make up for his previous actions.

On the night of Begins Night which would be Shotaro's final job with Sokichi, they were investigating a Gaia Memory research building. Ignoring his mentor's instructions, he snuck onto a ferry filled with people affiliated with Museum and infiltrated the island, much to Sokichi's chagrin. Shotaro met Philip for the first time and called him a "demon". However, due to Shotaro's recklessness, their cover was blown and indirectly led to Sokichi as Kamen Rider Skull being defeated by the Taboo Dopant. Sokichi then left Shotaro to continue on in his stead, giving him his prized fedora in his final moments. Shortly afterwards, Philip and Shotaro used the DoubleDriver that Sokichi had carried to transform into Kamen Rider Double for the first time. After going into FangJoker on Philip's suggestion, Double created and opening and escaped the island, returning to the Narumi Detective Agency where Shotaro mourned Sokichi's death.

Protecting Futo[]

Since meeting Philip and becoming Double, Shotaro continued to fight the Dopants. After meeting Akiko Narumi, his late mentor's daughter, she began helping Shotaro and Philip in their work.

During a case involving the Arms Dopant, Shotaro and Akiko were captured by Museum. He is rendered unable to transform with the DoubleDriver due to a silver solvent blocking the right slot. This forced Philip with the option to transform into Double FangJoker and take over as the host. Despite going berserk, Shotaro managed to enter the Gaia Library to snap Philip back in control, promising to not let the Fang Memory run out of control.

Shotaro would occasionally encounter Kirihiko Sudo, a representative of Museum operating as the Nasca Dopant. When he learned of the Museum's true evils, he decided to rebel against them even helping Double destroy the evolved Bird Dopant. Despite their differences, Shotaro and Kirihiko professed that they would do anything to protect the city. After learning of Kirihiko's death, Shotaro mourned him and decided to carry on Kirihiko's will to protect Fudo.

Twin Rider Maximum[]

While continuing the battles against the Dopants, the Narumi Detective Office would encounter a new Kamen Rider in the form of Ryu Terui, the Superintendent of Futo Police. Much to their surprise, Kamen Rider Accel was a cold and vengeful warrior who was hunting down the Weather Dopant, Dr. Shinkuro Isaka, who was responsible for killing his family. Eventually, the Kamen Riders were able to put aside their differences to pursue justice rather than revenge.

Shotaro's physiology was not ideal for Gaia Memory use, and he was never Shroud's ideal candidate for the host of Double. Because of this, he had trouble maintaining their Rider form when Philip's power was evolving. However, he later proves that he has a knack for being the 'wild card', being incredibly difficult to predict in such a manner this quality leads not only to him resonating strongly with the Joker Memory and match Philip's heightened power, but also displaying the ability to exceed expectations and being able to transform into Kamen Rider Double CycloneJokerXtreme.

Eternal Partners[]

Following the destruction of the Futo Tower, the Kamen Riders would finally confront the Taboo Dopant, Ryubei Sonozaki. However, Shotaro was influenced by the Terror Memory's power, which made him lose his fighting spirit due to overwhelming fear. The next day, Shotaro was encouraged by Philip and Akiko to overcome the fear and finally successfully defeated Ryubei Sonozaki. They were able to rescue Philip and brought him back to the office.

As Jun Kazu made his presence known as the Utopia Dopant, Shotaro learned that once Philip transforms again, he will disappear. After their companions were attacked by the Utopia Dopant, Shotaro decided to go after Kazu alone and puts on Sokichi Narumi's fedora. After successfully rescuing Wakana, he joined forces with Philip one last time to defeat the Utopia Dopant. Afterwards, Shotaro dutifully de-transformed following a tearful goodbye to Philip. He returned to the office and learnt Philip left behind a Lost Driver for him and cried after seeing his partner's message.

One year later, Shotaro continued to protect Futo on his own as Kamen Rider Joker. Eventually after a series of events, Shotaro and the others reunite with Philip as they transform into Kamen Rider Double once more. After defeating the Energy Dopant, they declared anyone who make their city peril to "count up their sins".

Movie War Core[]

With Akiko and Ryu officially becoming engaged to one another, Shotaro was asked by Akiko to walk her down the aisle in Sokichi's stead, a role he accepted graciously. During the day of the wedding however, Shotaro, Philip and Ryu found themselves facing a rogue Pteranodon Yummy in battle, the trio recognizing it to not be a Dopant. After the fight, Akiko appears before them, chiding their absence in the rehearsal. Arguing with Akiko over their priorities, Shotaro learns from Ryu of Akiko's state of anxiety, hence why Ryu did not have his Accel Driver with him.

Once Akiko becomes kidnapped by the Pteranodon Yummy, Shotaro and the others search for her across Futo City, leading to their encounter with Kamen Rider Core. Recognizing Akiko to be unharmed, Shotaro and Philip face their gargantuan foe as Double, with Eiji Hino/Kamen Rider OOO as support.

Outmatched, Philip tells the two of Core's weakness, requiring them to travel deep underground. Successfully reaching the artifact and destroying it, Shotaro, Philip, and Ankh witnessed Eiji attacked by Core, seemingly perishing. To their relief though, Eiji had transformed into Tajadol Form, being completely unharmed. The excess power from Tajadol Form then gave Shotaro and Philip a significant power boost, turning them into CycloneJokerGoldXtreme Form.

Both now teamed up to defeat the corrupted Kamen Rider, using their full power to destroy Core completely. After the battle ended, Shotaro and Philip bid their friend goodbye once more, attending Akiko's wedding as planned. However, to Philip's surprise, Shotaro did not await Akiko at the wedding aisle, instead sitting at a guest seat. With a calm and content look, Shotaro explained his actions via pointing toward Akiko's direction, revealing that Sokichi had arrived in spiritual form. Glad to see that Sokichi had attended the wedding as promised, Shotaro clapped alongside the guests as Akiko and Ryu became wedded, ending the film on a happy note.

Movie War Mega Max[]

While Shotaro is roaming around Futo on his bike, he almost crashes into two runaway vehicles which Shotaro chases after. He manages to stop both vehicles, the drivers and passengers reveal themselves to be members of Foundation X. As Shotaro attempts to transform into Double, Philip was preoccupied on one of his personal research, forcing Shotaro to fight alone as Kamen Rider Joker. Once Kamen Rider Joker defeated the members, Shotaro notice an empty container on the ground as the detective is curious about their plan.

Later, he and Philip meets up with Eiji and Gentaro as they inform them about Kannagi's plan and his betrayal to Foundation X. After informing to them, Shotaro and Philip plans on aiding the young Riders against Kannagi. However, several members of Kannagi's appears to stop them having both detectives to fight them, giving the young Riders a chance to fight Kannagi. After defeating them, Shotaro and Philip witness the destruction of Exodus as the former congratulates the young Riders' success.

Meeting and Training Tokime[]

As Gaia Memory distribution continued to occur throughout Futo, Shotaro and the agency continued to take on case after case regarding the appearance of new Dopants. After being entranced by the beauty of Tokime, Shotaro takes on a case where Tokime was framed to have been the Heat Dopant, but clears her name after deducing Sabu of the Yakuza to have been the true culprit. Shotaro eventually took Tokime in as an assistant where she accompanied him to her first case, protecting Megu Kazamatsuri from an unknown threat. They encounter the sender of the death threats, Mutsuo Mihara aka the Meganeura Dopant, to which Shotaro is left incapacitated, so he entrusts Tokime to finish the case with Philip. After the case's resolution, Shotaro learned from Ryu that Mutsuo was killed under strict police surveillance, and that there may be an evil group working behind the scenes.

The Closed k[]

While Shotaro and Philip are out on a mushroom hunt in the blizzarding mountains, they encounter a young woman who brings them into a glamorous mansion inhabited by Kuuya Kagamino. As he offers the duo shelter, he explains that he is a descendent of a family from a small village who used to mine gold and were ultimately considered royalty. In the mansion were his grandmother Kiku Kagamino, as well as four attractive young women competing to be Kuuya's bride, one of them being the woman who brought Shotaro and Philip in. As part of the competition, they must live in the mansion for six months without ever revealing their face or name, while trying to win Kuuya's attraction. There were also Kiku's friend Daisuke Kanamori, as well as the butler Tadashi Kimura in the mansion, making it a total of ten people in it.

While enjoying the accommodations, the duo meet Kanamori, who ran a shop that Kiku is a regular of. As Shotaro walks around, the woman who brought him and Philip in, reveals her face as well as her name as Kanna Kubokura, who has grown tired of being a bride before putting her mask back on and running off outside. Shotaro runs after her but discovered one of the brides killed by the Alcohol Dopant, who reveals its intent to kill the brides. As the Dopant runs after a brief fight with Double, the detective duo gathers everyone else in the mansion in an attempt to track down the killer of the victim, Koyomi Zaizen. Each of the brides privately reveal their identities to the duo: the hostess Kurumi Namba, former model Kei Arito, and Kanna herself who was only a regular office worker.

Kamen Rider Taisen[]

Shotaro returns in Kamen Rider Taisen, as both Kamen Rider Double and Kamen Rider Joker. After being informed what happened in Japan, Shotaro meets with Tsukasa and Kaito, to be asked for finding someone related to Shun Aoi but refuses it due to receiving a job to search the missing pets (which Kaito claims to be idiotic). After being helped by Kaito, Tsukasa tells him about the Heisei Riders and Showa Riders beginning to fight each other and he wants Shotaro to research the reason as it is related to Shun. Soon, he is confronted by two BLACKs who think that Heisei Riders are nuisances as they attack Tsukasa when he is taking Shun to his mother. Shotaro tells Tsukasa to leave it to him as he held off the two BLACKs as Kamen Rider Joker. Kaito soon helps him as Kamen Rider Baron. In the battle, with Kaito's help, he defeats Black RX with his Rider Kick.

At the climax, Joker is one of the surviving Riders in the battle between Heisei and Showa. He faces Kamen Rider Black, with the two Riders taking each other out with their Rider Kicks. Gaim is soon left as the last Rider standing before Kurayami Taishi of the Badan Empire and reveals himself to be Ryo Murasame (Kamen Rider ZX). He, alongside all 30 Kamen Riders are restored to defeat the Badan Empire.

In the final battle, he fights 2 and stopped after 1 proclaims his loss against Gaim. In the alternate ending to this movie, he stopped fighting after 1 proclaims his victory against Gaim. Nonetheless in the ending credits, Shotaro begins his search for a missing cat. [Heisei Rider vs. Showa Rider: Kamen Rider Taisen feat. Super Sentai]

Shotaro transforms into Kamen Rider Joker in front of Kamen Rider Meteor and Tomoko as seen in Kamen Rider Travelers Record.

Aside from Kamen Rider Double, Shotaro appears transforming into Kamen Rider Joker in the video game Kamen Rider Travelers Record.

Kamen Rider Super Climax Heroes[]

Being a part of Double's half, Kamen Rider Joker is in one slot with Double. He can be selected from either just a single person, or with Double's right-half, his partner, Kamen Rider Cyclone.

Kamen Rider Battride War Genesis[]

Shotaro's Kamen Rider Joker form makes its playable debut in Battride War Genesis. Even though Kamen Rider Joker, along with Double's FangJoker form are separate from the original Double, it is still part of Double's halves like in Climax Heroes series. Selecting 2 of 3 Double's separate playable halves (such as selecting the original Double with either of his FangJoker form or Kamen Rider Joker half) for a Tag Partner mode is impossible, this also affects both counterparts of Kuuga (Godai/original and Onodera/A.R. World, and both separate forms of Decade (original and Violent Emotion) and Ghost (original and separate Toucon Boost DLC).

Kamen Rider Joker's play style is similar to both of his Double's halves. He has a similar, yet the same normals and aerial attacks as Double's Joker Half-Changes, and has a similar hidden R1 terminology through via attacks as FangJoker. Joker's R1 terminology is to increase his agility, once he says "Now, Count Up Your Sins". His only finisher is a Maximum Drive from his barrages of melee attacks to Rider Punch, ending with his Rider Kick.

Personality[]

Shotaro Hidari is an emotional man with a firm sense of justice. Raised in Futo since childhood, Shotaro greatly adores the city, hence his dedication as its guardian. Thus, Shotaro tries very hard to make a good name for Kamen Rider, and live up to expectations that come with said title. Being significantly empathetic in nature, his primary concern in battle is to save innocent lives from danger, no matter the personal risks.

Stemming from his desire to be "hardboiled detective", Shotaro usually acts akin to a poser, therefore receiving the nickname "half-boiled". Furthermore, he initially had a rather shallow attitude, such as declining unexciting cases. Upon Akiko's arrival to Futo City though, Shotaro found himself forced to deal with several changes at his agency, much to his initial chagrin. Through time, this ultimately proved helpful in Shotaro's growth, allowing him to become more decisive and understanding towards others.

Shotaro has a peculiar habit of flicking his left wrist in the air before and during his battles as Double. Furthermore, he is very fond of retro-style items from Windscale, hence his choice of attire, typewriter, and bike helmet.

Abilities[]

  • Deductive Skills: Shotaro is a competent detective with great intuition and a keen eye for details, swiftly constructing any received information together to solve difficult cases. He also possesses extensive knowledge of the city and an impressive network of information providers, sometimes outspeeding the police by a wide margin.
  • Pet Searching: From his unique methods, Shotaro can find lost pets with surprising efficiency, ranging from cats to turtles.
  • Expert Combatant: Since his late teen years, Shotaro is a very capable fighter, able to defeat several Masquerade Dopants. Evidently, Shotaro can even fight NEVER mercenaries on near-equal terms, despite their immense training and enhancements. Even as an elderly, Shotaro put up a good fight against the Old Dopant, defeating him via Philip and Terui's help.
  • Memory Synchronization: From his repeated use of Double's Gaia Memories, Shotaro developed a strong affinity for their powers, especially the Joker Memory. This grants him several advantages in combat.

Forms[]

Main article: Kamen Rider Double

When Shotaro and Philip set their Gaia Memories into the DoubleDriver, Philip's conscious mind enters Shotaro's body to produce Double (with the exception of FangJoker, where the opposite happens). Through the different Gaia Memories, Double has access to various combinations of powers, weapons, strengths, and weaknesses. Kamen Rider Double's forms accessed through their first six Gaia Memories are known as Half Changes (ハーフチェンジ, Hāfu Chenji), due to the fact that Double can switch out one (or both) Gaia Memories in the belt in a Memory Change (メモリチェンジ, Memori Chenji) to change forms.

CycloneJoker is considered to be the most well balanced, thus making it Double's default form, despite being capable of initiating transformation with any set of Double's Gaia Memories.

During the events of Shotaro's jidai geki-influenced dream, the Gaia Memories are replaced by wooden placards known as kifuda (木札) and uses the Japanese pronounciation of the Gaia Memory names or synonyms; thus, this form is dubbed as ShippuKirifuda (疾風切札, Shippū Kirifuda, Whirlwind/Trump card). It is a yellow and blue form accessed with the Luna Memory and the Trigger Memory hence known as the Homing Skilled Sniper (帰宅技狙撃兵, Kitaku Waza Sogekihei). In this form, Double's Triggermagnum is able to fire gold and blue bolts that can curve and track targets. LunaTrigger is mostly well-suited for marksmanship, but its shots are slower than the other 2 Trigger forms.

This form's finisher is the Trigger Full Burst (トリガーフルバースト, Torigā Furu Bāsuto): After inserting the Trigger Memory in the Triggermagnum, Double fires multiple charged homing shots at the enemy.

LunaTrigger's ending theme is entitled "Finger on the Trigger".

FangJoker (ファングジョーカー, Fangu Jōkā) is a white and black form that Double uses to escape from Philip's captors during the events of the Begins Night as seen in Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider W & Decade: Movie War 2010. As the Fang Memory was designed for Philip, his and Shotaro's roles as Double are reversed in FangJoker, with Shotaro's consciousness transferred into Philip's body for the transformation, Double's left eye flashes whenever Shotaro speaks. This form is described as the Wild Skilled Warrior (野生技戦士, Yasei Waza Senshi), since the transformation takes an extreme tax on Philip's body, proving unreliable for long-term fights.

Initially, FangJoker was near uncontrollable, outright traumatizing Philip when first used. In its second usage though, Shotaro's bond with Philip ultimately allowed them to restain FangJoker's dangerous nature, thus cementing this form as one of Double's strongest powers.

By activating the Fang Memory's horn between one and three times, FangJoker is able to summon a bladed weapon that forms on various portions of FangJoker's body. One time summons the Arm Saber (アームセイバー, Āmu Seibā) on FangJoker's wrist to be used as a close combat weapon; two times summons the Shoulder Saber (ショルダーセイバー, Shorudā Seibā), which can be removed from FangJoker's right shoulder to be used as a dagger or boomerang-like weapon; three times summons the Maximum Saber (マキシマムセイバー, Makishimamu Seibā) on FangJoker's right ankle.

This form's finisher is the Fang Strizer (ファングストライザー, Fangu Sutoraizā): A flying roundhouse kick with the Maximum Saber in which a projection of the Fang Memory's head is shown "biting" the opponent when Double comes in contact while forming a projection of the English Letter F. This can be used in combination with Kamen Rider Accel's Accel Glanzer to perform the Rider Twin Maximum (ライダーツインマキシマム, Raidā Tsuin Makishimamu).

Appearances: Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider W & Decade: Movie War 2010, W Episodes 16-18, 20, 22, 28, 31, 38, 43-44, A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate, Movie War Ultimatum (Director's Cut)

FangMetal (Shoulder Fang)

"Fang! Metal! (Heavy metal guitar riffs to metallic synth)"
―Transformation announcement[src]

FangMetal (ファメタル, Fangu Metaru) is a white and metallic-grey form accessed with the Fang Memory and the Metal Memory, exclusive to the Futo Tantei manga. In this form, the Metalshaft is unusable but instead the Metal Memory's powers enhances Double's entire body giving it significant boost in armor and power, especially when Double activates the Shoulder Fang. Its unique feature is Double's whole body are covered sideways with saber fangs from shoulder to arm are coated in metallic coating with the Metal attribute, in which Double cannot use the Shoulder Saber weapons as they are rigidly fixed to his body. Thus Double's fighting style lies in close-quarters combat and using its armored sabers to land rough consecutive strikes and slashes.

Like the other Metal forms, its combat paremeters lie in both offense and defense with reduced running speed and increased weight as the only drawback, but compensated with Fang's ferocious attribute and Metal's sturdiness being able to reflect any attack. which is is considered to be the strongest, but also the slowest of the 9 forms, due to its running speed and weight and it's jumping height is weaker than the other 2 Metal forms.

This form's finisher is the Fang Spear Bullet (ファングスピアバレット, Fangu Supia Baretto): a corkscrew tackle in which Double hurls the opponent into the air before delivering a spiralling charge towards the enemy. With Double's arms crossed, shoulders high and fangs extended, the attack is powerful enough as a penetrating drill.

FangTrigger (ファングトリガー, Fangu Torigā) is a white and blue form accessed with the Fang Memory and the Trigger Memory, exclusive to the Futo Tantei manga. In this form, the Triggermagnum is unusable but instead the Trigger Memory's powers is transferred to Double's left wrist where the Arm Saber functions are formed to generate a bow.

Like the other Trigger forms, its specializes in long-ranged combat and marksmanship. The sabers on its fist can form a tiger-claw weapon where they can be fired as rapid long-range projectiles called Fist Needles (フィストニードル), that can paralyze the opponent. In addition, the needles are coated with the same organic material as Double's bioarmor, they can home onto the opponent while transmitting through inorganic substances.

This form's finisher is the Fang Screwdle (ファングスクリュードル, Fangu Sukuryūdoru): A charged energy arrow is fired with the tip dinosaur-shaped in DoubleDriver format. When fired, the arrow fires at a fast and spiralling pace where the dinosaur tip crunches the opponent upon impact, before sending the enemy flying and exploding.

CycloneJokerXtreme

―Transformation announcement[src]
Rider Statistics[11]
  • Height: 195 cm
  • Weight: 82 kg
Ability Parameters[11]
  • Punching Power: 5 t
  • Kicking Power: 10 t
    • Double Xtreme: 80 t
  • Maximum Jump Height: 120 m
  • Maximum Running Speed: 100 m per 4 seconds

CycloneJokerXtreme (サイクロンジョーカーエクストリーム, Saikuron Jōkā Ekustorīmu) is the first evolved form of CycloneJoker accessed with the Xtreme Memory, linking it directly to the infinite knowledge of the true Gaia Memory through the iridescent band going down the middle of Kamen Rider Double's body called the Crystal Server (クリスタルサーバー, Kurisutaru Sābā). It is also known as the Evolved Perfect Warrior (進化完璧戦士, Shinka Kanpeki Senshi), as it also represents the perfect union between Shotaro and Philip. The sheer knowledge of this form wields allows Double to instantly analyze the opponent's capabilities. While not as physically strong as FangJoker, this form has better defenses as it can easily withstood the Weather Dopant's attacks without trouble.

During the transformation, the middle of Double begins to glow as the Xtreme Memory absorbs the Cyclone and Joker Memories and attaches itself onto the DoubleDriver. The Xtreme Memory opens up revealing a spinning X as Double rips open the center revealing the prism-colored center.

Unlike the other forms of Double, where Shotaro or Philip provide the body for their Rider Form, the Xtreme Memory absorbs Philip's body and fuses it with Shotaro's body in their Rider Form becoming one in body, mind and soul. Thus when either Philip or Shotaro speaks on their own, their respective side's eye flashes, and why they also appear together as soon as they break the transformation.

By gathering energy into his fists from either halves Double can throw powerful punches at the opponent.

In this form, Double wields the Prismbicker which has its own Maximum Drives. Unlike the other forms of Double, CycloneJokerXtreme's motif also includes the letter X.

This form has five finishers:

  • Xtreme Memory finisher:
    • Double Xtreme (ダブルエクストリーム, Daburu Ekustorīmu): After closing and re-opening the Xtreme Memory, a large tornado emits from the Xtreme Memory carring Double into the air and accelerating him towards the target.
  • Maximum Slot + Xtreme Memory finisher:
    • Double Prism Xtreme (ダブルプリズムエクストリーム, Daburu Purizumu Ekusutorīmu): After inserting the Prism Memory in the Maximum Slot and closing and re-opening the Xtreme Memory, Double performs an upgraded version of the Double Xtreme kick which extends the initial drop kick into bicycle kicks.
  • Prismsword finisher:
    • Prism Break (プリズムブレイク, Purizumu Bureiku): After inserting the Prism Memory into the Prismsword and by pressing the Maximum Starter button on its hilt, Double can perform an energized slash or a wave of energy.
  • Prismbicker finishers:
    • Through the Prism Memory's ability to link Philip's three elemental Gaia Memories with the Joker Memory, the Prismbicker allows CycloneJokerXtreme to perform two quadruple power Maximum Drives:
      • Bicker Charge Break (ビッカーチャージブレイク, Bikkā Chāji Bureiku): A powerful version of Prism Break. Double combines the power of the Prismsword and the 4 Gaia Memories and delivers an enhanced version of the Prism Break slash. A variation of the Bicker Charge Break turns the Bickershield into a whirling disc of energy which Kamen Rider Double can ride like a surfboard, allowing him to perform the Maximum Drive against an airborne foe.
      • Bicker Finalusion (ビッカーファイナリュージョン, Bikkā Fainaryūjon): Double combines the power of the Prismbicker and the 4 Gaia Memories and delivers a powerful laser blast. A variation of Bicker Finalusion in which the Metal Memory is used in place of the Joker Memory creates a strong energy shield capable of withstanding a wide-area devastation attack from Claydoll Xtreme.

CycloneJokerXtreme's ending theme is entitled "Extreme Dream".

Appearances: W Episodes 32-34, Donburi's α/Farewell Beloved Recipe, W 35-37, 39-44, A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate, W 45-46, 48, Movie War Core, Movie War Mega Max, Wizard Episode 53

CycloneJokerGoldXtreme (サイクロンジョーカーゴールドエクストリーム, Saikuron Jōkā Gōrudo Ekusutorīmu) is the second evolved form of CycloneJokerXtreme. This form is achieved when intense wind blows against Double and into the Xtreme Memory, and activates its full potential.

In this form, the Crystal Server turns golden, with a set of insect wings that flurishes out of Double's back, allowing Double to fly. Double uses this form again in Movie War Core to finish off Kamen Rider Core with Kamen Rider OOO Tajadol Combo.

This form's Memory Break finisher is the Golden Xtreme (ゴールデンエクストリーム, Gōruden Ekusutorīmu): Double performs a flying, golden version of the Double Xtreme kick.

This form, along with CycloneCyclone, are gained after Kamen Rider Decade uses the Final Form Ride card, Kamen Rider W to separate Double's halves where they are controlled by the minds and bodies they originated from.

An interesting note is that the DoubleDriver on both bodies has two of the same Gaia Memories used in CycloneJoker. JokerJoker gains the Joker Memory's power of agility and strength.

When Decade uses the Final Attack Ride Card, CycloneCyclone, JokerJoker, and Decade perform the three-way Triple Extreme (トリプルエクストリーム, Toripuru Ekusutorīmu) attack, where both Doubles use their traditional Drop Kicks while Decade uses his traditional Flying Side Kick.

This form is exclusive to Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider W & Decade: Movie War 2010.

By utilizing a Joker Memory into the Lostdriver, Shotaro can transform into Kamen Rider Joker, with his appearance being identical to that of Kamen Rider Double. This Rider was first accessed when Shotaro found the T2 Joker Memory and was given a LostDriver. Due to this, Shotaro is able to transform on his own in the event of Philip's unavailability. After the T2 Joker Memory's destruction, Shotaro began using his original Joker Memory, while also being given a replacement Lostdriver by Philip after his first one was destroyed by Eternal.

Though Kamen Rider Joker's basic stats are lower than Double CycloneJoker, Shotaro's accumulated fighting experience and lack of need for synchronization with Philip is more than enough to compensate, with the Joker Memory's special ability further strengthening him. Thus, Kamen Rider Joker can potentially rival even Double's super forms in battle, as far as simple prowess is concerned.

Joker consists of the following parts:[13]

  • Blackout Partition (ブラックアウトパーテーション, Burakkuauto Pātēshon): Since the transformation with the single Joker Memory, the "Central Partition" organ is not present, and the color is all black. The role of distributing of the Gaia Force (ガイアフォース, Gaia Fōsu) throughout the body is the same as the previous Central Partition.
  • Gaiarmor (ガイアーマー, Gaiāmā): The whole body. The reinforced skin is Shotaro's body changed by the power of Gaia Memory. It has both strength and flexibility that theoretically cannot be penetrated by even a .50 caliber magnum bullet. The slits carved all over the body are organs called Flexlits (フレックスリット, Furekku Suritto), and they are used to increase the stability of the body by discharging the excess power taken from the Gaia Memory to the outside.
  • Joker Lung (ジョーカーラング, Jōkā Rangu): A reinforced exoskeletal part that houses a "Converter Lung", an organ that enhances and controls cardiopulmonary functions to the utmost limit. The built-in Converter Lung generates a lung capacity several dozen times that of a normal person, and the stored oxygen allows it to function for up to 12 hours even in oxygen-free conditions such as underwater or in a vacuum. The surface is engraved with the "Joker Crest" which manages athletic performance.
  • Joker Brace (ジョーカーブレス, Jōkā Buresu): Joker Memory's power is strengthened and amplified around the arms to obtain powerful arm strength.
  • Joker Knuckle (ジョーカーナックル, Jōkā Nakkuru): The gauntlet has the same hardness as a reinforced exoskeleton parts of the Joker Lung, and is a powerful shield that does not accept even the slightest gunfire. And at the same time, the punches from this fist, reinforced by the brace, produce a punching power that far surpasses that of world-class boxers.
  • Joker Anklet (ジョーカーアンクレット, Jōkā Ankuretto): It amplifies Joker Memory's power around the legs, and increases the strength of the legs to the utmost limit. When the Maximum Drive is activated, the power is further amplified and concentrated, and a powerful kick can be unleashed. It is controlled by the Joker Crest and also has the ability to prevent self-destruction due to the recoil that bounces back at itself.

Relationships[]

Friends & Allies[]

  • Philip: Since the events of Begins Night, Shotaro partnered with Philip as a means of combating Museum's forces, doing so partly to fulfill Sokichi's last wishes. Due to Philip's cold behavior however, Shotaro struggled to work with him at first, expressing dismay on several occasions. As Philip began to learn the importance of camaraderie and empathy from Shotaro though, the two gradually became the best of friends.
  • Ryu Terui/Kamen Rider Accel: Stemming from Ryu's aggressive attitude, he and Shotaro initially held a mutual dislike for each other, resembling a rivalry of sorts. Yet, this did not stop Shotaro from fighting alongside Ryu when necessary, recognizing the latter's prowess as a warrior. Similarly, while deeming Shotaro to be soft-hearted, Ryu begrudgingly aknowleged his crime-fighting methods as "acceptable". Evidently, by the end of the series, the two have an amicable relationship, fighting side by side as Kamen Riders.
  • Sokichi Narumi/Kamen Rider Skull: His mentor and first boss. Shotaro admired Sokichi since childhood and aspired to become a detective like him. Sokichi on the other hand, while seeing Shotaro as inexperienced, did recognize his courage and kindness. Near his demise, Sokichi encouraged Shotaro to continue their case, confident that Shotaro will be successful.
  • Akiko Narumi: Though annoyed by each other's quirks, Shotaro and Akiko have a surprisingly close relationship, similar to a brother and sister. Prior to the Sweets Dopant case, Akiko subconsciously envied Shotaro for the time he spent with Sokichi, while Shotaro saw her as a threat to his "public image". Upon resolving these issues, the two have become more cooperative, assisting one another in Philip's absence. Notably, when marrying Ryu, Akiko personally requested Shotaro to walk her down the aisle, an important role she originally intended for her beloved father.
  • Tokime: Tokime is Shotaro's assistant in Futo Tantei. Though seemingly attracted to Tokime, Shotaro's previous experience with women makes it difficult for him to aknowledge these feelings. In contrast, Tokime acts in an openly fond manner to Shotaro, often to the point of flirting at him.
  • Mikio Jinno: During his delinquent years, Shotaro was constantly pursued by Jinno as a beat cop. This ultimately cultivated into an odd but genuine friendship, doing wacky hijinks together on various occasions. Likewise, the two regularly cooperate to solve cases.
  • Shun Makura: Shotaro and Makura rarely get along, mostly stemming from Makura's rude attitude. This antagonistic relationship slightly mellowed by the end of the series, being tolerant at each other's presence.
  • Futo Irregulars: Alongside their role as Shotaro's informants, each member recognize him to be their dear friend, accompanying him in social gatherings.
  • Kirihiko Sudo: Initially seeing each other as nemeses, the two began respecting one another for their love of Fuuto City, becoming allies in Kirihiko's final moments.
  • Shroud: Unlike Sokichi, Shroud did not trust Shotaro at first, percieving him as a threat for her son Philip. By witnessing Shotaro's resolve several times though, Shroud came to appreciate his presence in Philip's life, expressing her gratitude in their final interaction.
  • Legend Riders:
    • Tsukasa Kadoya/Kamen Rider Decade: Being fellow Kamen Riders, Shotaro and Tsukasa have a mutual respect for one another, assisting the other in moments of peril.
    • Eiji Hino/Kamen Rider OOO: Since their battle against NEVER, both Shotaro and Eiji have become allies in their crusade for justice, tag-teaming on multiple occasions.
    • Gentaro Kisaragi/Kamen Rider Fourze: While viewing Gentaro as an oddball for his mannerism and choice of fashion, Shotaro approves Gentaro's sense of loyalty, calling him a "nice guy".
    • Kaito Kumon/Kamen Rider Baron: During the Badan Empire's invasion, Kaito and Shotaro cooperated in finding lost pets for clients, cases which Kaito dismissed as "foolish". In response, Shotaro told him that every progress they made would help someone, not matter how small. Coming to respect this idea, Kaito later purchased a turtle to remember their brief partnership, amused by Shotaro's reference to him as "Kameko".

Enemies[]

  • Sonozaki family: Among the Sonozaki family, Shotaro was barely aknowledged at first, seen as little more than a tool for Philip's development. This changed once Shotaro overcame all odds and stopped their Gaia Impact plan, earning their genuine aknowledgement.
  • Shinkuro Isaka: As foes, Isaka gained a begrudging respect for Shotaro, impressed by his unpredictable nature.
  • Foundation X: Disgusted by Foundation X's vile acts, Shotaro sees them as a great threat, constantly foiling their plots.
  • NEVER: During their invasion of Futo city, NEVER faced off against Shotaro and his allies.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

Main Series[]

Other Media[]

Rider No.[]

As one of the leading Rider protagonist of Kamen Rider W, Shotaro Hidari (Kamen Rider Double) is labeled Kamen Rider #26 (仮面ライダー26号, Kamen Raidā Nijūrokugō)) and Heisei Rider #11 (平成ライダー11号, Heisei Raidā Jūichigō)) alongside Philip. [Quiz! Decade Countdown!!]

Notes[]

  • His surname is literally translated as "left" (, hidari), as his Gaia Memories provide the left side of any Double formation.
  • Due to Masaki Suda's increasing prolific popularity in Japan, it has become difficult to re-hire Suda for guest appearances as Philip. Thus, Shotaro is often the sole representative of Double to appear in subsequent appearances such as films or crossovers, while Suda's role being filled often with archival recordings or replacements.
  • When Shotaro faces Black and Black RX in the Rider War, he remarks on the similarities between them and says he feels a strange camaraderie with the black riders, given all three Riders are based off of a black grasshopper.
  • When he uses Shipuu and Kirifuda, the pattern that appears on his face is known as Sugi-Guma (筋隈), which represents the power and righteous anger of the character wearing it.
  • Fuuto PI depicts a different type of transformation for Shotaro than from the live action series. In the live-action, the armor for W is infused with the wind, while Fuuto PI shows hexagonal shapes from his chest covering his body as actual armor.
