Man Spider[src] (蜘蛛男, Kumo Otoko) is a spider-themed monster created by Shocker. He is a monster specializing in assassination and was responsible for kidnapping Takeshi Hongo so that Shocker could create Kamen Rider 1.

History

The creation of Kamen Rider 1

"Takeshi Hongo, you traitor! I'll stop your breath this time!"
―Man Spider, disgusted of Hongo's Shocker betrayal[src]

Man Spider was one of the monsters created by Shocker to help in the process of world domination. He was sent to kidnap Takeshi Hongo so Shocker could turn him into a super cyborg, Hongo's capture was a success and everything was going according to plan until Hiroshi Midorikawa, one of Shocker's scientists, betrayed the organization and saved Hongo. Man Spider discreetly chased the two until they reached a hideout and killed Hiroshi. In an unfortunate coincidence, Hiroshi's daughter, Ruriko Midorikawa, arrived at just this moment and believed that Hongo had killed her father, but before she could do anything, Man Spider knocked her out and kidnapped her. Hongo went into combat against the monster and several Shocker Combatmen arrived to help Man Spider kill Hongo. Hongo transformed into Kamen Rider 1 and had a brief fight against the monster, which was finally defeated with a Rider Kick.[The Eerie Man Spider]

He received orders alongside Shinigami Chameleon to go kidnap the football player named Ken Nemoto for the plan to invade the Toyo Atomic Energy Research Laboratory could be a success. Nemoto had a brief fight against the two monsters but was easily captured by Man Spider's webs.

Man Spider, along with the other resurrected monsters and Tokageron, later launched an attack on the laboratory, but were easily overpowered by Kamen Rider 1 and killed by the explosion of the Barrier Destruction Ball of Tokageron.[Tokageron and the Large Monster Army]

Spider Man manga

Man Spider appeared in Shotaro Ishinomori's original Kamen Rider manga. As in TV series, he is the first monster to be introduced and face Hongo. His appearance is almost similar to his live-action counterpart, with the exception of his four arms.

Unlike his live-action counterpart, Man Spider actually survived his first battle with Hongo. He was rescued by fellow Shocker monster, Moray Eel Man, who brought him back to Shocker's base where he begged the Great Leader for a second chance to defeat Hongo. After being repaired, Man Spider once again set out to hunt Hongo while being watched by Bat Man, who was under orders to execute him should he fail. Unable to defeat Hongo, Man Spider chose to end his own life out of fear.

Legacy

Man Spider holds the status of being the first monster in the entire Kamen Rider franchise. As a result, he and the second Shocker Inhumanoid, Bat Man, are often referenced by the first monsters created or encountered in many later series sharing the same animal motifs. In these cases, the spider-based monster is the first to be encountered, while the bat-based monster appears second or alongside the spider monster. Together with Cobra Man, the first monster to attain a stronger form, the spider, bat, and cobra form a trio of reoocurring monster motifs.
