A Suit actor (スーツアクター, sūtsu akutā) is a member of a Japanese tokusatsu production who performs stunts in a full costume that normally obscures their identity from the viewer and performs pantomime, while the story-wise character's actor's voice is added through ADR (アフレコ, afureko, lit. after-recording). Today, most (if not all) suit actors employed for the production of Kamen Rider and other tokusatsu franchises are affiliated with Japan Action Enterprise.

Helmetless Riders[]

When the franchise began, Hiroshi Fujioka did not only portray his own character, but also performed his own stunts in-suit. However, Fujioka famously shattered his leg in a motorcycle stunt gone wrong, resulting in him being replaced by Takeshi Sasaki as a new rider, with Fujioka returning to the show alongside Sasaki after recovering. Today, tarento actors are prohibited from performing their own suit-acting to prevent Fujioka's incident from happening again. Some actors/actresses are exceptions, such as Minami Tsukui, Kenji Ohba, and Jyunichi Haruta, as they are all experienced and trained stuntmen/women associated with the JAE.

Although this is often the case, there have been some occasions where tarento actors/actresses have worn their Rider suits and appeared helmetless on-screen for the sake of the plot, or have put on the suit behind-the-scenes.
